MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited collegeandsix (6) months of experience in environmental protection, regulation, or health; one of the physical or natural sciences; or engineering;or
One and a half (1.5) years of experience as an Environmental Specialist I or higher with the State of Florida;or
Two (2) years of experience as described above.
A valid Class E Driver License.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must attend a 10-week Basic Canine Handler Training for Cargo/Postal/Mollusk/Environmental Program and a 2-week Agriculture Detector dog Team Supervisor Course, in Newnan Georgia, and receive certification of completion from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for both within six months of hire.
Frequent travel, including overnight and sometimes up to two weeks on an emergency program, required.
NOTES:
Successful candidate must pass a background screening, including fingerprinting, as a condition of employment.
JOB DUTIES:
GENERAL STATEMENT:This is a professional regulatory position assigned to the Detector Dog Inspection Program. This position provides supervision and regulatory oversight at secure mail and package sorting facilities, with a focus on packaged commodities that contain agricultural products regulated by the state. It also provides supervision and regulatory oversight in environmental areas for the invasive mollusks, plant pest detection and eradication programs.
Monitors work performance of subordinates, including periodic written evaluations and discussions; counseling to develop skills and correct deficiencies; recognizing employee accomplishments; and recommending timely disciplinary actions as needed. Approves timesheets and leave requests. Documents recommendations for special pay increases, reclassifications, and disciplinary actions, when appropriate. Efficiently carries out employee selection actions when vacancies are to be filled. Responsible and accountable for managing budget/dollars/resources (staff, vehicles, computers, cell phones, etc.) of any assigned programs in an efficient and accountable manner. Responsible for ensuring that assigned program areas have operational procedures and processes which result in accountability and compliance with division and department policies and procedures. Coordinates with other managers and advisors to develop, submit for approval and disseminate policy and procedures as required to insure the success of the inspection of regulated commodities at parcel facilities and in environmental areas using detector dog technology.
Organizes and coordinates the training of new and existing employees, including a review of departmental personnel procedures, division administrative procedures and the Detector Dog Inspection procedures. Maintains and modifies, as needed, the Detector Dog Manual and instructions for the applications and data dashboards.
Gathers and compiles information. Prepares reports on a daily, weekly, monthly, semi-annual, and annual basis for activities conducted.
Participates, prepares and presents educational and outreach efforts of the program. Maintains an effective working relationship with fellow employees, parcel facilities, other agencies and the general public. Advises the general public, community groups, government agencies and private industry on department and division laws, rules and regulations.
Performs other related duties as directed by the Supervisor.
