This is a fulltime position located at the Capitol Annex Building in Baton Rouge, LA.

About this position:

This position is located in the Archaeology Division in the Office of Cultural Development.

Job Duties:

60% - Consults with federal agencies, state agencies, federally recognized Indian Tribes, private firms, and private archeological contractors concerning the Section 106 process and implementation of projects under that process. Has primary responsibility for developing and overseeing Section 106 Programmatic Agreements and Memoranda of Agreements with federal agencies. Conducts review of Section 106 project reports submitted to the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to ensure they meet state standards.

10% - Oversees the State Historic Preservation Office's response for archaeological resources during disasters and serves as the SHPO's representative for archaeological resources during any resulting Section 106 projects, including development of Programmatic Agreements and Memoranda of Agreements.

10% - Serves as a point of contact for members of the public with questions about Louisiana archaeology, preservation of archaeological sites, unmarked human burials, and abandoned cemeteries.

5% - Consults with federal agencies, state agencies, and private firms concerning discoveries of unmarked human burials and abandoned cemeteries. Issue permits for the disinterment of human remains when required and oversees implementations of the permits. Consults with federally recognized Indian Tribes concerning excavation, analysis, and reinternment of human remains determined to be of Native American ancestry.

5% - Oversees and manages the Division of Archaeology staff, budgets, and programs.

5% - Consults with State agencies concerning archaeological resources on State lands.

5% - Serves as senior technical advisor to the deputy State Historic Preservation Officer and the State Historic Preservation Officer.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, maritime studies, geography, history, or heritage resources plus four years of experience as an archaeologist.

Examples of Work

Responsible for the administration of the state's archaeological antiquities act and the archaeological portions of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Directs the operations of the Division of Archaeology.

Serves as senior technical advisor on archaeological matters to the State Historic Preservation Officer and to the Secretary of the Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism.

Selects and assigns staff and identifies staff development needs.

Works with a series of different governmental agencies, organizations, universities, industry, and private individuals in all sections of the state to identify, to develop and to implement programs to protect archaeological resources while making information on archaeology available to the public. Works directly with high governmental agency officials, state

legislators, local elected official to resolve disputes resulting from the need to protect archaeological resources.

Locates funding to implement necessary archaeology programs.

Serves as ex-official member of the Louisiana Archaeological Survey and Antiquities Commission.
