Position Summary

Pay Rate: $24.84 - $27.60 upon meeting probationary period requirements. MSU Benefits - Free comprehensive health care for you and your family as well as a 10% contribution toward your retirement; Generous sick, vacation, personal and holiday time;

This position will maintain, repair, and install all types of fire extinguishers within Academic, Farms, and Athletic buildings in order to ensure they are ready for use when needed. Collects data on a mobile device using App Tree for fire extinguisher location, condition and expiration date. Maintains proper working inventory of fire extinguisher basic parts. Schedules and performs inspections with campus tenants and responds to emergencies.

Job responsibilities are as follows:

60% - Inspects fire extinguishers for type, asset number,size, location and potential hazards annually or as required by university regulations. Inspection updates are performed in AppTree using a mobile device. Communicates with campus customers and respond to complaints.

15% - Maintains fire extinguishers parts inventory and disposing of devices and evaluating new products

15% - Schedules buildings for inspections and reports any observed building safety issues.

10% - Correspondence through email, training, meetings and professional development.

This position is not eligible for remote work. Regular in-person attendance is required to meet business and customer needs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Graduation from High School or equivalent education.

  • Two years’ experience in the maintenance and repair of fire extinguisher and related fire safety equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Expert knowledge of MIOSHA part 8; NFPA #10, #45 and #30; AGA and DOT regulations related to pressurized cylinders; and the full range of fire suppression compounds and their proper use.

  • Completion of radiation safety level 2 training prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period.

  • Valid Michigan vehicle operator’s license.

  • Must meet the University safe driving standards.

  • Working knowledge and ability to utilize spreadsheet and e-mail software.

  • Frequent lifting of over 50 pounds and occasional lift of 75 pounds.

Desired Qualifications

Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and Teams; knowledge of facilities operations; working knowledge of AppTree and Ability software, or equivalent software platforms; good customer relations/service skills; ability to work independently and as an effective member of a team; solid organizational skills with paying attention to detail.
