MAIN FUNCTION:

The System Assistant Director, Education is responsible and accountable for supervising and coordinating orientation and educational programs for ArnotHealth, patients and the community. The System Assistant Director is responsible for supervising the centralized and decentralized staff development instructors and coordinators. Reports to System Director of Education

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

NURSING PROCESS

** 1. Plans, develops, recommends, implements and directs the orientation and continuing educational programs for ArnotHealth.

** 2. Oversees clinical staff development activities and programs for all ArnotHealth departments.

  • Coordinates the planning, implementation and evaluation of educational programs for all nursing personnel.

  • Coordinates the schedule and instructor assignments for ArnotHealth programs.

  • Addresses educational concerns of the employee, in collaboration with Human Resources Department.

  • Ensures that all CEU/Contact hours criteria are followed.

    ** 7. Demonstrates clinical and organizational expertise.

    COMMITTEE WORK

    ** 8. Serves on, or delegates to others, committees, task forces, and work groups on a voluntary and appointed basis at ArnotHealth.

    DELEGATION

    ** 9. Coordinates/delegates responsibility for educational offerings for Arnot Health programs, i.e., CPR, ACLS, MERIT Fair, Teaching Days.

    COORDINATION

    ** 10. Oversees the general orientation scheduling for all ArnotHealth employees.

  • Delegates teaching responsibilities in coordination with other health care team members.

  • Acts as community liaison to coordinate training programs, i.e., American Heart Association.

  • Coordinates educational resources of ArnotHealth to the community at large.

    COMMUNICATION

    ** 14. Develops and maintains effective communication mechanisms with other staff development instructors, physicians, patient/families, and between the Education Department and other departments.

    BUDGET PLANNING/MONITORING

  • Develops and maintains compliance with operational, personnel and capital budget planning, implementation and controls for ArnotHealth-wide educational needs.

  • Collaborates with Education Departments at St. Joseph’s and Ira Davenport to maintain compliance with budget for educational needs at each facility.

  • Administers staff development scholarships, loans and training/certification reimbursement.

    POLICY IMPLEMENTATION

  • Demonstrates knowledge of Medical Center policies and applies them in decision making for both clinical and educational issues.

    QUALITY IMPROVEMENT

    ** 19. Demonstrates Quality Improvement principles and participates in the process as appropriate.

  • Incorporates quality assurance reports, staff and patient satisfaction surveys and recommendations from ArnotHealth committees in establishing appropriate educational programs for employees

    STANDARDS

  • Assures age appropriate educational information in all program development for ArnotHealth staff. This includes all age groups; neonate, infant, children, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

  • Participates in the development of job descriptions for personnel with educational responsibilities.

  • Develops and implements educational policies and procedures.

  • Maintains accurate records of employees’ educational activities.

  • Establishes and reports progress toward achievement of ArnotHealth educational objectives.

    LEADERSHIP

  • Demonstrates effective problem identification and problem-solving skills.

  • Assumes accountability and responsibility for self and those functioning under his/her supervision.

    1. Maintains current and expert knowledge of both Nursing Department and ArnotHealth policies and procedures.
  • Acts as a resource to departmental managers and staff responsible for educational activities.

    PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL

  • Is responsible for annual and ongoing performance appraisal of instructors, coordinators and staff.

    OTHER

  • Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.

  • Employee understands and demonstrates the importance of satisfying the needs of the customer/patient by interacting with him/her in a friendly and caring way, being attentive to the customer’s needs, both psychologically and physically, and by taking the initiative to maintain communication with the customer in order to provide a secure and pleasant experience with the Medical Center.

    EDUCATION:

    Current NYS nursing license. BS/BSN in Nursing required. MS/MSN in Nursing preferred or in progress. CPR instructor certified. Certification in continuing education/staff development desirable.

    EXPERIENCE:

    Minimum 5 years of appropriate nursing practice. Experienced in educational principles; teaching experience desirable. Excellent communication, writing and computer skills.

    CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:

    BLS required within 30 days of hire. CPR Instructor certification required within 90 days of hire.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Light physical effort required. Moderate-heavy objects lifted, some reaching and stooping. Required to be on feet much of the time.

    INFECTION CONTROL:

    Performs all aspects of standard precautions when engaging in patient care.

    EXPOSURE CATEGORY :

    Category I. Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
