Job Description
Saint Luke’s Mid-America Heart Institute (MAHI) in Kansas City, MO and the Office of Research Services are actively searching for a Director of Cardiovascular Research. The ideal candidate will partner with the Co-Directors of MAHI and the Office of Research Services to lead our cardiovascular research programs, including the design, development, and oversight of projects, leadership of the Clinical Scholar Program, and securing of extramural research funding.
Saint Luke’s MAHI has a large and well-established research enterprise. We support an NHLBI-funded T32 research fellowship training program and have over 20 cardiologists with dedicated research time, producing >300 peer reviewed publications per year along with multiple Late Breaking Clinical Trials at major meetings. The Office of Research Services houses 10 statisticians, 8 of whom are dedicated to cardiology, and is a primary site for NCDR data analytics (along with Duke, Yale, and Harvard.) Cardiovascular research is well funded through Industry and NIH grants and employs clinical trial coordinators for all cardiovascular subspecialties.
Interested candidates will hold a faculty position at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine and may also apply for the role of academic chair of cardiology. The school is seeking a dynamic leader to serve as the inaugural chair of its newly established Department of Cardiology.
Job Functions:
Directs and oversees clinical research activities and provides oversight to a major cardiovascular research program to include strategic planning, recruitment of investigators, and budget management in collaboration with Office of Research Services
Responsible for the recruitment and orientation of clinical investigators/clinical scholars in cardiovascular disease and evaluation of their research-related performance and productivity
Collaborates with the Manager of Research Coordination in the hiring, orienting, and evaluating performance of clinical research staff supporting cardiovascular research
Develops and maintains relationships with internal/external sources including other departments, research institutions, sponsors, funding sources and the scientific/research community
Works with the Office of Research Services and Research Compliance Business Partner to ensure that research activities comply with federal, state, local and internal regulations and standards
Engages in routine Research Investigator Advisory/Leadership Meetings to stay informed about the latest research developments within Saint Luke’s Health System and foster collaboration with fellow research leaders
Works with the Office of Research Services to ensure that appropriate research-related policies and procedures are consistently implemented
Provides mentorship support to cardiovascular clinician investigators, staff, and trainees, including assistance with designing, reviewing, and implementing research study protocols, as well as analyzing and interpreting data, and preparing scientific presentations and publications
Collaborates with the Co-Directors of the Saint Luke’s Mid-America Heart Institute, Manager of Research Coordination, and Cardiovascular Research staff in determining prioritization and evaluating feasibility of proposed research studies, optimizing study start-up activities, and maintaining a balanced research portfolio
In collaboration with Office of Research Services, participates in regular reviews of cardiovascular research portfolio performance, including patient recruitment, academic performance (e.g., presentations at national and international meetings and peer-reviewed publications) and financial performance
Works with Saint Luke’s Foundation, Co-Directors of the Saint Luke’s Mid-America Heart Institute, and VP of Research to assist with fundraising efforts for cardiovascular research
Maintains their status as an active clinician investigator, directs their own robust portfolio of funded clinical research studies (including extramurally supported studies) and demonstrates exceptional academic productivity
Expected time commitment for research and administrative duties is expected to be in the 60-70% range
Clinical cardiovascular work will be performed as a member of the Cardiovascular Division of Saint Luke’s Physician Group
Qualifications:
MD/DO in Cardiovascular Disease with 7 or more years of experience in conducting and managing large and/or complex research projects/programs
Established national/international reputation as a leader in a cardiovascular research-related field
Track record of research productivity, including presentations at national and international conferences, peer-reviewed publications, and extramural funding
Associate Professor or higher academic rank or commensurate rank from alternate career position (e.g., pharmaceutical or device industry, regulatory agencies)
Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire a diverse team and foster a collaborative culture
Relevant work or post-graduate education experience leading cardiovascular research projects, including question development, study design, data collection, analysis, and reporting
An ability to interpret, synthesize, and translate research findings for diverse audiences
A familiarity with academic and practitioner research on relevant topics
Advanced knowledge of quantitative research methods
