Position Summary/Description:
We are seeking a highly motivated and organized Lab Manager to join our team in the Carolina Vagina Lab, a vaginal microbiome research lab led by Dr. Indriati Hood Pishchany in the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Pediatrics. The Lab Manager will play a pivotal role in supporting and overseeing the daily operations of the lab, ensuring the smooth execution of research projects, and maintaining a safe and efficient working environment. This individual will be responsible for a range of activities, including conducting research, providing logistical support, protocol management, data organization and analysis, and contributing to the preparation of grants and publications.
Key Responsibilities
Research Project Oversight:
Assist the Principal Investigator in planning, coordinating, and executing research projects related to the vaginal microbiome. In particular, the Lab Manager will oversee projects related to preclinical model development.
Oversee the day-to-day activities of lab personnel, particularly those related to preclinical model development, ensuring that projects are progressing according to timelines and objectives.
Monitor and maintain high standards of scientific rigor and quality control throughout all research activities.
Logistical Support and Lab Operations:
Manage lab inventory, including ordering and maintaining supplies, reagents, and equipment to ensure the uninterrupted flow of lab operations.
Develop, implement, and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and protocols to ensure compliance with best practices and regulatory standards.
Oversee equipment maintenance and service schedules, troubleshoot issues, and coordinate repairs when necessary.
Ensure adherence to safety protocols and regulatory requirements, including maintaining safety documentation and conducting regular safety audits.
Provide training and support to lab personnel on safety procedures, use of equipment, and best laboratory practices.
Serve as the point of contact for internal and external audits and inspections.
Data Management and Analysis:
Oversee the organization, storage, and management of research data, including maintaining accurate records and databases.
Assist in the analysis and interpretation of data, including generating reports, figures, and tables for publications and presentations.
Collaborate with research team members to ensure data integrity and facilitate efficient data sharing and access.
Grants, Publications and other Research Communications:
Contribute to the preparation of grant proposals, including compiling data, writing sections, and assisting with budget preparation.
Assist in the writing, editing, and submission of research manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations.
Stay current with relevant literature and contribute to discussions on the latest advancements and methodologies in vaginal microbiome research.
Education and Experience:
Preference for those with experience with anaerobic and/or fastidious bacteria; molecular biology techniques including PCR , gel electrophoresis, bacterial transformation, quantitative PCR , SDS - PAGE ; moderate proficiency with R, Python or other programing languages; experience supervising and teaching trainees including undergraduate and graduate students and/or post-doctoral fellows.
Priority will be given to candidates who:
Possess a solid understanding of research principles, study design, laboratory processes, data collection and analysis.
Have prior experience working with anaerobic bacteria and using an anaerobic chamber.
Have prior experience with bacterial isolation from clinical specimens and/or ‘culturomics.’
Have extensive knowledge of and/or experience in NGS library preparation and 16S and/or metagenomic sequencing and analysis.
Can utilize, repair, and operate equipment and instruments essential to the function of the laboratory with minimal supervision.
Possess strong oral and written communication skills to assist in grant writing and proposal development.
Have experience supervising others in a lab setting.
Essential Skills:
Required competencies include bacterial cultivation (streak-plating, liquid growth assays, preparation of frozen stocks, CFU determination).
