POSITION SUMMARY
The Childbirth Educator is responsible for assessing, developing, planning, coordinating, evaluating and documenting all educational processes for (expectant) and new parents, staff and other health care team members. Provides consultation and facilitates continuing education to other areas and the community. Continually improves educational outcomes through the quality assessment and improvement process. Participates in designated organizational initiatives and projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develops and maintains childbirth and parenting educational activities.
Acts as a consultant to staff and other members of the health care team to communicate and/or counsel and collaborate regarding education by 1:1 consultation, participating on committees, support groups and process teams.
Uses quality improvement and current research to design and evaluate processes, systems, tools and resources.
Monitors the quality and effectiveness of educational activities to continually improve outcomes.
Maintains and submits educational and financial records for department-specific education
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITLIES
Competent within 6 months of hire with all age groups within defined patient population. Demonstrates sensitivity when interacting with diverse ethnic groups.
Ability to maintain positive interaction with all customers and coworkers in order to effectively care for the patients and their families.
Public speaking skill required.
Ability to interpret, synthesize, prioritize and make immediate judgments using long and short-term memory.

Completes 100%25%20of training, in-service, Do-it Groups (DIGs) and Just Do It (JDI) requirements established by MNM and by any professional or licensing organizations.
- Designated work hours are varied related to customer needs.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
BLS certification required.
Two years of experience in field of Obstetrics.
Certification in CBE, Lactation and as Car Seat Safety technician within one year of hire.
QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED
Graduate of a school of nursing
As a Magnet organization, for those hired into an RN position after January 1, 2014, it is required to obtain a BSN within five years of your start date as an RN with McLaren Northern Michigan.
